Bjarni Benediktsson’s surprise announcement prompts political upheaval in Iceland

Svandís Svavarsdóttir, head of the Left Green party and Minister of Infrastructure, expressed surprise at Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson’s recent decision. Her remarks follow a meeting with the heads of the governing parties, which took place yesterday where the current state of affairs was discussed but did not hint at the prime minister’s intentions regarding parliamentary dissolution.

Benediktsson called a press conference at the Government House shortly after announcing that he had informed the leaders of the Progressive Party and the Left Greens of his intention to propose a dissolution of parliament to the President of Iceland. This would be followed by snap elections set for late November.

Svandís described the prime minister’s announcement as significant news, particularly considering the recent discussions among the party leaders. “During our meeting, where we were deliberating on various issues, the topic of parliamentary dissolution did not come up at all. Therefore, I was taken aback,” she stated.

With parliamentary elections on the horizon, the political landscape in Iceland appears set for a transformation, reflecting rising tensions within the ruling coalition and among its member parties. The Left Green party has indicated that it is assessing its position in light of these developments.
