Earthquake swarm reported near Herðubreið in Iceland

A small earthquake swarm has been reported near Herðubreið. Ríkey Júlíusdóttir, a geologist at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, noted that such swarms are not uncommon in this area, explaining that they often come in bursts of activity.

The swarm began around 9 AM this morning, with the strongest tremor registering at a magnitude of 2.2. Ríkey believes that the activity is likely tapering off, as the intervals between earthquakes are increasing compared to earlier in the morning.

While earthquakes have also been recorded on the Reykjanes Ridge off the Reykjanes Peninsula, they have occurred far less frequently than near Herðubreið. Ríkey commented that there is not much earth movement currently taking place on the Reykjanes Peninsula itself.
