Dissatisfaction rises among Icelandic ice hockey players over IIHA’s handling of racism allegations

Dissatisfaction is rising within Iceland’s ice hockey community due to perceived inadequate responses from the Icelandic Ice Hockey Association (IIHA) regarding reported cases of racism. Players of foreign descent are reportedly hesitant to volunteer for the national team amid concerns that racist attitudes persist within the sport.

The controversy stems from incidents that occurred during and after a game between Skautafélag Akureyrar (SA) and Skautafélag Reykjavíkur (SR) on September 28 in Akureyri. During the match, a player from SA received a game misconduct penalty for an illegal hit. After the incident, a player from SA allegedly made inappropriate comments about an injured SR player, who is of darker skin tone. Reports indicate that the remarks were directed specifically at the player’s race.

The IIHA has been criticized for its handling of the situation, with the player who made the derogatory comments receiving only a one-game suspension. Conversely, the player who reacted to the comments faced a much harsher penalty: a three-month suspension, representing the strictest sanction applied in such cases. A brother of the player involved also received a three-month ban for alleged threats.

SR has filed a formal complaint with the IIHA, seeking a reevaluation of the decision and reserving the right to escalate the matter to the Icelandic Sports Federation or the courts, citing violations of laws against racial discrimination.

Bjarni Helgason, a board member at SR, highlighted significant discontent within the hockey community, stating that many players, having faced prejudice throughout their lives, are now unwilling to participate as coaches or in national selection due to these issues. He emphasized the urgent need for stronger actions against racism in the sport.
