Woman identifies herself in 1950s photograph linked to Auralan Settlement in Turku
Arjariitta Vuorinen from Kaarina recognized herself in a 1950s photograph shown in recent news. The Auralan Settlement in Turku was seeking more information about the photo taken long ago in its yard, which was highlighted during the organization’s 85th anniversary announcement. Vuorinen spotted the image on news outlets and Facebook and accurately dated it based on her jacket. “I can narrow it down to 1956 or 1957. I had that jacket then. Perhaps the regional news mentioned that the picture is from 70 years ago. I thought I wouldn’t be in the photo if it were from that long ago, not looking like that,” Vuorinen chuckled.
Vuorinen enjoys solving photo mysteries shared in social media groups. “I look for old class photos on Facebook. I wonder if anyone has posted pictures from our classes, but so far, no luck.”
Historian Veli Pekka Toropainen, a researcher with the Finnish Genealogical Society, studies the world of photographs and noted the presence of people in 1950s attire in the Auralan photo. He emphasized that the period can be determined by the bus in the image as well. Toropainen encourages people to post photos in public groups for better identification and to document details about the images, like who is in them and what is happening.
He elaborated on how various elements of photographs—such as paper type, edges, and size—can reveal much about their age. For instance, 1920s photos typically have uncut edges, while those from the 1950s often have smooth borders. Toropainen also shared insights on identifying details from school photos, military uniforms, and fashion trends, highlighting the resources available through museums and archives for anyone seeking more historical context.
