Iceland’s Independence Party asserts dominance amid coalition tensions

A member of Iceland’s Independence Party has stated that neither the Progressive Party nor the Left-Green Movement can put the Independence Party in a corner, emphasizing its dominant position as the largest party in the Icelandic Parliament. According to Bryndís Haraldsdóttir, if meaningful progress is to be made, one of the parties must yield.

Bryndís acknowledged the seriousness of ongoing discussions among government officials, particularly after recent tensions escalated, highlighted by a statement from the Left-Green Movement suggesting the coalition’s future was uncertain. Current disagreements between the parties particularly revolve around issues related to immigration and energy policies.

Despite speculation about crumbling partnerships, Bryndís affirmed that the Independence Party is committed to fulfilling its obligations under the coalition agreement. She stressed that if any party is not prepared to adhere to this agreement, they must communicate that clearly in the coming days.

She also echoed the sentiment that the current deadlock, especially concerning immigration and energy issues, must lead to new developments if no compromises are achieved. “Then let’s see. Then something new will happen,” she stated.

As of now, discussions continue informally, with no official meetings scheduled for the ruling coalition. This has left many to wonder whether behind-the-scenes negotiations are taking place among party leaders.
