In a vibrant afternoon disco in Rovaniemi, Finland, colorful tunics, glittery trousers, and floral shirts create a lively atmosphere. A group of joyful women dances energetically, accompanied by a few men in more serious outfits. The event has a minimum age limit of 65, ensuring a unique demographic absent of younger patrons.

Despite the disco starting in a quarter of an hour, around a hundred eager dancers are already filling the basement venue, ready to groove to the sounds of 1970s and 1980s disco music. The playlist is pre-set on a USB stick, leaving no room for song requests today. Irene Tikka, the event organizer and city cultural producer, grabs the microphone to welcome the attendees enthusiastically.

Dancing together not only lifts spirits but also enhances physical fitness. As work-life ends, maintaining social relationships becomes increasingly vital, especially since many retirees face loneliness with fewer people in their daily lives. Tikka believes such free daytime dance events in the city center are refreshing for the elderly and suggests more frequent occurrences at various neighborhoods to encourage participation.

Marketta Palojärvi and Outi Santikko have been on the dance floor since the event began, joyfully exclaiming how every song has been danced to. There was no budget involved in the event’s organization, as Tikka managed the logistics without financial transactions. The city theater offered the venue and sound equipment, while promotional efforts were handled through retirement associations and local channels.

This disco marks the second of its kind, with the first event in May filling the venue to capacity. It seems that future events are likely, as laughter and music fill the air, and everyone enjoys the dance floor.
