Jarne Byhre, a translator from Drammen, expressed his excitement upon learning that South Korean author Han Kang has been awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature. Byhre has dedicated 20 years to translating literature and has worked with several of Han Kang’s books, which he describes as some of the most compelling he has encountered. He believes the award is well-deserved, noting that Han Kang’s writing is characterized by its modern, feminist perspective, coupled with significant social critique.

The Nobel Prize recognizes Han Kang’s “intense poetic prose that confronts historical traumas and reveals human vulnerability.” Born in Kwangju and raised in Seoul, she is the first South Korean writer to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. She debuted with poetry in 1993 and gained international acclaim with her novel “The Vegetarian,” published in 2007 and translated into Norwegian in 2018.

Byhre shared insights into the challenges of translation, which requires not just language skills but a deep understanding of cultural nuances. He typically engages in a three-round translation process to ensure accuracy and flow. While Byhre clarifies that the Nobel Prize is not a recognition of his translation work specifically, he takes pride in having contributed to the promotion of Korean literature.

Celebrating the award, Han Kang mentioned her plans for a modest tea ceremony, while Byhre opted for a glass of red wine. He views opportunities to speak about Korean literature as a worthy form of celebration, highlighting the growing global interest in this field.
