Independence Party convenes at Valhöll to discuss coalition governance in Iceland

The Independence Party’s parliamentary group convened today at Valhöll for a meeting, called on short notice at 3:30 PM. This gathering aims to discuss coalition governance and upcoming tasks, as indicated by Bjarni Benediktsson, the party leader and Prime Minister.

Upon arrival, some party members were tight-lipped about the agenda, with Foreign Minister Þórdís Kolbrún Reykfjörð Gylfadóttir stating that the group simply intends to meet and have discussions. Another member, Óli Björn Kárason, called for calm, suggesting that clarity would emerge soon. Birgir Þórarinsson echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that everything would be clarified shortly.

Bjarni Benediktsson acknowledged the current political tension surrounding the government and noted the necessity for the parliamentary group to hold regular discussions. The upcoming winter and the coalition’s status will be key topics of the meeting.

When asked about the stability of the coalition, Benediktsson admitted there are challenges, commenting, “We are in a slope; we have to acknowledge that.” He highlighted the importance of discussing government collaboration, noting recent events that necessitate a candid conversation among members.

There are currently no plans for additional meetings, and no discussions have been scheduled among the leaders of the three governing parties. The Left-Green Movement has not called for a parliamentary group meeting either.
