Once a year, one could expect April Fool’s stories. Now, as the season of misinformation is upon us, it has become commonplace to encounter fake images and misleading articles online.
This issue was prominently discussed at a media conference organized today by the Nordic House and the national broadcaster Kringvarpið.
Jákup Brúsá, an expert in social media, was one of the speakers at the event. He highlighted that several countries are beginning to enact laws regarding the use of artificial intelligence in media.
Notably, the European Union adopted AI legislation in August this year.
The situation in the Faroe Islands reflects a similar need for regulation as seen elsewhere.
In September, nine directors from various institutions and organizations endorsed a public appeal to political authorities, urging them to address misinformation politically.
The appeal states, “We are facing a upheaval. Language, culture, education, healthcare, public administration, finance, and industry are just some of the sectors undergoing significant changes—changes that could affect the very foundations of democracy itself.”
