Court in Eastern Uusimaa sentences man to ten years for homicide in Vantaa’s Ruskeasanta district

A court in Eastern Uusimaa has sentenced a 36-year-old man to ten years in prison for a homicide that occurred in Vantaa’s Ruskeasanta district in June. According to the ruling, the man, disguised, accompanied another 44-year-old man to resolve a debt issue at an apartment where they attacked two men inside. The 44-year-old testified in court that he owed money to the apartment’s occupant and initially engaged in violence but later realized that the second man present was bleeding.

The defendant admitted to stabbing and cutting the victim with a knife he brought, which had a blade measuring 20 centimeters. The court found that the man claimed to have acted in excessive self-defense. However, it stated that there was no evidence of prior violence before the stabbing, disqualifying the act as self-defense.

Additionally, Billah El Mouatez Zegadin, also 36, was convicted of manslaughter and aggravated violation of domestic peace, receiving a ten-year sentence. The court determined that Zegadin did not intend to kill the victim but must have considered death to be quite likely. The ruling stated that Zegadin entered the apartment armed and intended to use violence, attacking the victim almost immediately after arriving.

The court detailed that the act involved multiple stabbings and cuts, some penetrating deeply into the victim’s body, indicating substantial force in at least one strike. The victim was not shown to have provoked or defended himself in a way that could justify Zegadin’s actions.

The 44-year-old man who accompanied Zegadin was sentenced to a suspended prison sentence for aggravated violation of domestic peace and assaulting the apartment occupant. The verdict was announced on Thursday.
