Minister reviews fish processing exemption for Grímsey residents in Akureyri meeting
The Minister of Food and Agriculture is currently reviewing an exemption for the residents of Grímsey regarding local fish processing. During a meeting today in Akureyri, local officials discussed the demand for fish caught near Grímsey to be processed on the island itself. Fishermen on the island have expressed dissatisfaction with the recent changes.
In previous years, Grímsey fishermen enjoyed an exemption from regulations requiring local processing. However, they were recently informed that this exemption would not be extended. One local fisherman described this news as a devastating blow, stating that without the exemption, fishing would no longer be financially viable from Grímsey, as there has been no fish processing on the island for over a decade.
Akureyri’s mayor, Ásthildur Sturludóttir, along with the town council president, Halla Björk Reynisdóttir, met with the minister earlier today. Following the meeting, the mayor indicated that the minister showed understanding of the residents’ situation and agreed to consider the matter further.
Ásthildur expressed optimism that Grímsey residents would be allowed to continue their fishing activities. She expects to receive a response from the ministry in the coming days.
