As autumn winds blow and rain begins to fall, people in Finland are adjusting their wardrobes accordingly. On Wednesday, a fall storm hit Finland, proving to be more intense than anticipated. But do people really opt for waterproof gray jackets? We visited Helsinki and Vantaa to ask locals about their autumn style.

Imran Alberm shared his look: “I’m wearing Nike Air sneakers, jeans, and a college jacket. It’s a good time for college sweaters since it’s not too hot. I study engineering at Metropolia, and this attire suits belonging to the student group well.”

Cathy Kononow emphasized practicality and style, stating, “I need my outfit to withstand rain and wind while still looking good. Last spring, I searched for a colorful jacket, but it was tough; all the jackets in Finland seem to be blue, black, or brown. I was looking for orange but couldn’t find it anywhere, so this was the best I could do. Life needs color, especially here where everything can feel so gray.”

Juho Kähönen found comfort essential: “I found this furry jacket at a thrift shop. It’s warm, possibly a bit too warm. This time of year is tricky since it’s freezing in the morning, warm during the day, and icy at night. I usually need two jackets.”

Eetu Niittymäki expressed a love for coats, sharing, “I like long jackets. It changes the whole look. I wouldn’t admit it, but I have around thirty jackets. I wear this trench coat most.”

Others also highlighted their autumn essentials—practicality, warmth, and splashes of color—in navigating the transitional weather.
