Significant reduction in breast cancer screening fees announced in Iceland

Those undergoing breast cancer screening in Iceland will see a significant reduction in fees starting October 14. The government has announced that the screening fee will decrease from 6,000 Icelandic krónur to a standard charge of just 500 krónur.

Health Minister Willum Þór Þórsson shared this decision during a press conference. The initiative aims to enhance accessibility to screenings, which have previously deterred some women from participating. A recent report indicated that women from foreign backgrounds are less likely to attend screenings, as well as lower attendance rates in rural areas compared to the capital region.

Alma Möller, the national chief epidemiologist, emphasized that screenings are crucial for improving health outcomes. Currently, about 50 women die from breast cancer each year in Iceland, but early detection leads to simpler treatments, better survival rates, and lower costs for society as a whole. Möller noted that the cost of screening had posed a barrier for some women and urged everyone to take advantage of the new, reduced fee for breast cancer screening.
