Flags raised in Finland for Aleksis Kivi on Finnish Literature Day

Today, flags in Finland are raised in honor of author Aleksis Kivi, coinciding with the celebration of Finnish Literature Day. This observance became a national commemorative day in 1950, and in 1953 it was officially included in the almanac’s list of flag days. Today, it stands as an established flag day in Finland. The designation of Finnish Literature Day was added in 1978.

Kivi was the first author to write poems, plays, and stories in the Finnish language, making significant contributions to Finnish literature. His work is celebrated every year on his birthday, October 10th.
