Grindavík set to reopen soon as safety measures near completion in Iceland

Grindavík is set to reopen soon, with details regarding the opening expected to be announced next week, according to a member of the town’s committee. Safety measures are anticipated to be ready by mid-month.

Gunnar Einarsson, a member of the committee overseeing Grindavík, stated that all safety protocols are being reevaluated to facilitate increased access to the town. However, he was unable to provide a specific reopening date. He mentioned that there remain approximately 5 to 7 workdays until the completion of fencing to secure unsafe areas, with construction expected to wrap up around mid-month.

Once the fencing work is completed, it is estimated that over 7 kilometers of barriers will have been erected to cordon off hazardous zones, particularly along the town’s main artery, Víkurbrautin, due to a significant fissure.

The engineering firm Örugg is conducting a risk assessment based on data from civil protection agencies, the Meteorological Office, and the new safety measures in place. Currently, staffed closure points have been set up at all exits from the town, costing around 40 million Icelandic króna per month.

Gunnar emphasized that if the town were to open, it would do so under the guidance of a thorough risk assessment process. He indicated that despite ongoing land uplift in Svartsengi, it is believed to be safe to reopen Grindavík, confirming that all potential risks are being considered and deemed acceptable before making any decisions.
