Abid Raja recently visited Drammen High School to discuss his new book, “Our Honor and Our Fear,” which has ignited significant debate. Student Izlan Malik critiques Raja for making overly general statements and for conflating Islam with cultural practices, particularly regarding forced marriage, which he asserts is not permitted in Islam but is rooted in culture. Raja expresses concern that Muslims in Europe have become increasingly conservative and segregated from broader society, fearing this trend may also emerge in Norway.

Some students at the school, who have studied both of Raja’s books as part of their curriculum, value the importance of expressing controversial opinions. Raja believes that disagreement is essential and that individuals should be willing to change their views when they lack solid arguments. Meanwhile, Malik warns that Raja’s generalized comments could hinder dialogue and foster discontent among minority groups.

Raja underscores the significance of engaging with diverse viewpoints, especially in Drammen, which is Norway’s second-largest municipality for immigration. His visit, which coincides with a week focused on diversity, has sparked interest among students, some of whom state that exposure to differing opinions is beneficial for democracy.

While many students find Raja’s views thought-provoking, Malik expresses concern that Raja’s generalizations may alienate those he seeks to engage, potentially leading to a decrease in constructive dialogue.
