Strong demand for student accommodation in Iceland highlights robust enrollment trends
The culture of student accommodation in Iceland remains strong, with nearly 1,000 students currently residing in dormitories across the country. Despite some fluctuations in enrollment over the years, several accommodations are fully occupied this autumn. The largest dormitory is located in Akureyri, hosting over 300 students.
Twelve student residences operate nationwide, with two located in the Westfjords—one at Menntaskólinn in Ísafirði and another at Lýðskólinn in Flateyri. Heiðrún Tryggvadóttir, principal of Menntaskólinn, reports a significant surge in applications this year. “We’ve been seeing a steady increase in enrollment over recent years. However, this spring, there was an explosion in admissions to the dormitory. It’s been decades since we started the school year with full occupancy,” she noted.
In the eastern region, Árni Ólason, principal of the Menntaskólinn in Egilsstöðum, described a similar scenario, with over 80 students filling the accommodation, a substantial increase from just 50 six years ago.
The southern region has about 160 students in dormitories at Selfoss and Laugarvatn, but the most significant concentration is in Northern Iceland, where more than half of all dormitory students reside. From nearly 500 students in the north, over 300 are accommodated in the largest dormitory in Akureyri, reflecting a robust demand for student housing across the nation, particularly in the northern regions.
