Verdict expected in Albert Guðmundsson assault case in Reykjavík

A verdict in the case of Albert Guðmundsson, a football player accused of assaulting a woman in her thirties last year, is set to be announced on Thursday. Albert has consistently claimed his innocence throughout the proceedings.

The main hearing took place in September, during which a claim for damages of three million Icelandic krónur was presented. The hearings in this case have been closed to the public, adhering to standard practice in sexual offense cases.

The woman filed a complaint against Albert in August of last year. Following a police investigation, the case was initially dismissed by the district prosecutor in the spring, citing a low likelihood of conviction. However, the complainant appealed this decision to the state prosecutor, who overturned the dismissal and instructed that charges should be brought against Albert.

The case will now proceed in the Reykjavík District Court as the legal process continues.
