A driver of a delivery van who died in a rollover accident on Reykjanesbraut was under the influence of drugs and not wearing a seatbelt. According to a report from the Traffic Accident Investigation Committee, driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, and medications poses a significant problem on the roads.

The crash occurred on the morning of November 2, 2023. The driver was navigating the van on Reykjanesbraut near Innri-Njarðvik. Witnesses reported that the van abruptly moved from the right lane to the left and veered off the road, ending up in the area between the lanes.

The van struck a wire guardrail, causing it to overturn. The guardrail prevented the vehicle from crossing into the opposite lane. Unfortunately, the driver, who was alone in the vehicle, was ejected during the crash and sustained fatal injuries.

The investigation revealed that the driver was not capable of safely operating the vehicle due to the influence of drugs detected in his blood. Furthermore, he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the incident. The Traffic Accident Investigation Committee emphasized the serious implications of driving under the influence, noting that in nine out of 32 fatal accidents from 2020 to 2023, drivers were found to be under the influence of illegal substances and/or alcohol.

The committee reiterated earlier warnings about the dangers of impaired driving and stressed the importance of always wearing seatbelts, regardless of the journey length or location. It was noted that the driver might have survived if he had been buckled in.
