The search for a new location for Konukot, a shelter for homeless women in Reykjavík, has not yielded results despite being announced nearly four weeks ago. According to a statement from the Reykjavík City welfare department, there has been one viable lead, but the suggested property proved unsuitable for the shelter’s needs.
Konukot has operated for almost two decades in a deteriorating stone building on Eskihlíð. The current structure is small, has steep stairs that pose risks for both staff and clients, and contains only two restrooms and one shower. The staff is eager to relocate to a more accommodating facility.
Reykjavík City continues to actively seek new premises, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. “This matter is a priority, as the current location is highly inadequate, making it essential to find a new place for the operation,” the report stated.
The search for a suitable property remains ongoing.
