U.S. submarine USS Indiana visits Iceland for service call

Monday 7th October 2024 on 13:39 in Iceland

A nuclear-powered submarine from the United States is currently visiting Iceland for a service call. Although it is an attack submarine, it does not carry nuclear weapons. The submarine, named USS Indiana, is being escorted by the Icelandic Coast Guard’s vessel Freyja as it navigates in Icelandic waters.

This marks the fifth visit of a U.S. Navy submarine to Iceland’s territorial waters for such a purpose. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on April 18 that these submarines are permitted short stays off Iceland’s shores to take on provisions and rotate crew members.

The USS Indiana is scheduled to dock at Stakksfjörður, where crew changes and other services will take place. The Icelandic Coast Guard is leading the execution of this visit in collaboration with the National Police Commissioner, the Radiation Protection Authority, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
