A few dozen customers of Turku Energia were surprised to receive a proposal last week or early this week for a new fixed-term electricity contract offering electricity for two years at no cost—both the monthly fee and the kilowatt-hour price were set at exactly €0.00.

Harri Salo, the sales director at Turku Energia, explained that this was a pricing error due to a malfunction in the company’s information system, which was quickly rectified upon discovery. “This is a clear mistake, and there is a legal basis for correcting it. Everyone understands that no transactions can be conducted at zero price,” Salo stated.

One customer had accepted the offer, but even in this case, the contract was canceled. “Of course, it is unfortunate when we have to correct an error afterwards,” Salo acknowledged.

Salo further noted that the pricing of Turku Energia’s electricity contracts fluctuates based on changes in the derivatives market. Currently, the price for two-year contracts is slightly above nine cents per kilowatt-hour. He emphasized that such errors have not previously occurred in their offerings.

While the company does not disclose the exact number of its customers due to business confidentiality, Turku Energia reported a revenue of approximately €408 million and a profit of €24.4 million last year.
