Microplastics identified in significant quantities on seabed around Denmark’s coastlines

Research from Aalborg University has revealed significant quantities of microplastics on the seabed around Denmark’s coastlines. These microscopic plastic particles originate from various sources, including clothing, packaging, and tires. The study focused on sediment samples from the Limfjord, concluding that tons of microplastics have accumulated, particularly near urban areas.
Professor Jes Vollertsen, who leads the research at the university’s BUILD institute, characterizes the Limfjord and other Danish waters as microplastic dumping grounds. Microplastics are defined as plastic fragments smaller than five millimeters, with many being nearly invisible to the naked eye. One type of microplastic results from the degradation of larger plastic items, with over half traced back to tire wear. The other type comes from microbeads added to products like paints and cosmetics.
The long-term effects of microplastics on humans and wildlife remain uncertain. However, it is believed that small marine organisms face a risk of toxicity and starvation from ingesting these particles. Vollertsen emphasizes that once microplastics settle at the bottom of the fjord, they will remain there indefinitely, leaving a lasting environmental footprint.
Current estimates suggest there are up to 165 tons of microplastics on the Limfjord’s seabed. Much of the plastic present is thought to originate from washed-out waste rather than fishing or boating activities. To mitigate plastic accumulation, Vollertsen urges consumers to reconsider their consumption habits and advocate for responsible plastic management, such as recycling and avoiding littering.
As the issue of plastic pollution persists, researchers warn of potential detrimental effects on marine ecosystems and public health, including cellular damage, inflammation, and immune system impacts from microplastic exposure.
