On Tuesday, a fatal incident involving a cyclist occurred on Joutsantie in Kangasniemi, according to a police announcement. A car driven by a 50-year-old local man struck a cyclist, a 45-year-old male, who died instantly. The driver fled the scene on foot but was later apprehended by police in the vicinity.

Detective Inspector Timo Häkkinen reported that the driver has had previous encounters with law enforcement. The police are investigating the incident as severe driving under the influence, aggravated manslaughter, drug use offenses, and gross endangerment of traffic safety. The threshold for severe driving under the influence is set at 1.2 per mille. Häkkinen indicated that the driver is also suspected of being under the influence of other narcotics.

While the cyclist’s protective gear, including a helmet, did not impact the course of events, police are urging the public to prioritize the use of reflectors and safety equipment as the darker autumn months approach.
