During a recent bicycle ride, Unto Kellola and his dog Reetu encountered a frightening situation when they unexpectedly came across a wolf in the calm residential area of Raahe. According to reports from Yle, the encounter occurred in Honganpalo, where a wolf emerged from the bushes and lunged at Reetu. Fortunately, it did not bite the dog and quickly disappeared into the darkness of the forest. Kellola recounted the incident, noting that the experience was quite startling, although he believes the wolf retreated after hearing him shout.
Kellola fell during the encounter and suffered minor injuries, while Reetu was left shaken but unharmed. Following the incident, he reported it to the emergency services. A wildlife officer later discovered large paw and claw prints at the scene, supporting Kellola’s belief that the animal was indeed a wolf based on his extensive experience in hunting.
Mikael Luoma, the chief of wildlife management in Pohjanmaa, stated that similar incidents have been reported over the years, although encounters between dogs and wolves are relatively rare. While he could not comment specifically on this encounter, he suggested that it might involve a young wolf’s curiosity or typical territorial behavior.
Luoma explained that wolves kill between 50 to 60 dogs each year, often viewing them as competitors in their territory. He noted that there have been wolf territories in and around Raahe, and young wolves sometimes roam outside their established range.
For individuals finding themselves in a similar situation, Luoma advised slowly retreating if a wolf approaches and reporting the incident to the authorities, as the police have specific protocols for handling such dangerous encounters.
