Power outage impacts region from Westfjords to Húsavík in Iceland

A power outage affected a vast area from the Westfjords to Húsavík, triggered by a malfunction at Norðurál, which put additional strain on Landsnet’s electrical infrastructure.

The outage occurred around midday, with a spokesperson from Landsnet explaining that the incident severely impacted the electricity supply across nearly the entire region. As efforts to restore power got underway, it was reported that electricity was beginning to return in some areas.

Steinunn Þorsteinsdóttir from Landsnet expressed optimism, stating that they had gained a clear overview of the situation and were working on rebuilding the system. “Electricity is coming back in some places, and I hope it won’t be long before it is restored widely,” she noted.

The situation has not only affected the areas between the Westfjords and Húsavík but also extended to regions in East Iceland, as reported by several residents.

The outage was confirmed to have been related to maintenance work at Norðurál, which inadvertently disrupted Landsnet’s distribution network. Efforts are ongoing to restart production at the aluminum plant as they work to stabilize the situation.
