Efling Union Warns Visitors to Italian Restaurant Against Supporting Wage Theft and Tax Evasion
The Efling Union has placed a vehicle outside the Italian restaurant to inform passersby that engaging with the establishment supports wage theft and tax evasion. This action follows ongoing labor disputes and alleged violations of collective agreements by the restaurant.
Efling, which has previously organized protests outside the restaurant, is maintaining this presence with a vehicle displaying warnings about doing business with the establishment. The union claims that the restaurant owes around two million ISK in unpaid wages and is continuing discussions to resolve the situation.
Following last month’s protests, the restaurant owner, Elvar Ingimarsson, issued a statement acknowledging the debt and asserting that attempts were being made to settle the unpaid wages with the employees. However, Efling’s chairperson, Sólveig Anna Jónsdóttir, reported no progress on the issue, contesting Elvar’s claims and stating that the actual amounts owed are significantly higher.
Sólveig Anna emphasizes that the goal of the protest is to pressure Elvar into compensating his staff for overdue wages, while also raising awareness among guests about the restaurant’s practices. She expresses doubt that customers would choose to support a business that treats its employees in such a fashion, hoping that the union’s actions yield results soon.
