Negotiations between Efling union and Welfare Services Employers’ Association yield no results in Iceland

Negotiations between the Efling union and the Welfare Services Employers’ Association with the State Mediator yielded no results today, leading to the postponement of discussions until tomorrow morning. The ongoing conflict primarily revolves around staffing issues in nursing homes rather than pay and working conditions.

Sólveig Anna Jónsdóttir, chair of Efling, expressed her frustration, noting that little progress was made despite lengthy talks. “We are becoming impatient and would have liked to achieve more today,” she stated. She has indicated that if no feasible proposals are presented to address the staffing problems in nursing homes, a strike will be announced.

The situation is critical as the welfare sector faces increasing pressure concerning proper staffing levels, impacting both the quality of care received by residents and the workload on existing staff.
