Residents in central Vejle, who experienced flooding in their homes on Friday, should be compensated by the municipality, according to Martin Sikær, the chair of the Social Democrats in Vejle City Council. He has tasked legal experts within the municipality to explore potential compensation options, arguing that the local government has been too passive in addressing the situation. “We need to reflect on our own actions because we haven’t acted as we should have,” he stated.

The flooding occurred in the evening of September 28, when heavy rain inundated the streets, causing damage to homes and businesses. This follows a similar incident in February when residents faced water damage, prompting recommendations aimed at preventing future flooding, including plans to deepen the Omløbsåen river. However, these measures have yet to be implemented, which Sikær believes is unacceptable and leaves the community vulnerable to repeated incidents.

Sikær has initiated discussions among legal experts to determine the municipality’s responsibility regarding compensation for the damages incurred by residents. He acknowledges his role in the situation, representing a significant portion of the council, and insists that an investigation into the municipality’s culpability is warranted.

Vejle’s mayor, Jens Ejner Christensen of the Venstre party, agrees that the local government’s response has been inadequate. He asserts that more effective strategies are needed to prevent water from flooding into streets and homes. As a response, the municipality has begun immediate efforts to modify the Omløbsåen to better manage stormwater runoff. The mayor did not comment on Sikær’s proposal for a legal assessment concerning compensation for residents impacted by the flooding.
