Veterans in Denmark seek greater support as municipalities lack coordinators

Many veterans in Denmark lack access to a veteran coordinator in their municipalities, a situation that several political parties want to change. In upcoming negotiations this fall regarding veterans’ affairs, politicians are advocating for increased prioritization of this issue.

Veteran coordinators are primarily tasked with assisting veterans in their interactions with the public sector. However, there is significant disparity across municipalities. Currently, 25 out of Denmark’s 98 municipalities do not employ a coordinator, and among those that do, the available hours for assistance varies widely. The lack of support can lead to a diminished quality of life for veterans.

Defense spokesperson Peter Have from the Moderates calls for all municipalities to employ a coordinator, emphasizing the respect veterans deserve. Lise Bech from the Denmark Democrats echoes this sentiment, proposing a legal requirement for coordinators in every municipality to provide veterans with a consistent entry point into the support system.

Veteran advocate Lasse Lomholt, a veteran of three tours in Afghanistan who has lived with PTSD since then, shared his positive experiences with his coordinator in Aarhus, stating that her assistance has been invaluable to his recovery process.

Despite improvements, there are still challenges. While 73 municipalities have appointed coordinators, 25 remain without one. Furthermore, some coordinators report having only 0-2 hours per week allocated to veteran outreach, which hinders their ability to connect with those in need.

Both the Moderates and Denmark Democrats are prepared to allocate additional funding to enhance municipal support for veterans, stressing the importance of dedicated individuals in these roles. The Minister of Defense is also exploring avenues to hire more coordinators to ensure veterans receive optimal support across more municipalities.
