Police recover stolen valuables from ELKO stores in Iceland

The police have recovered part of the valuables stolen from ELKO. Authorities hope to retrieve the majority of the items taken during a robbery at two ELKO stores last week, according to police spokesperson Sigrún Jónasdóttir. A small portion of the items has already been recovered, and the investigation is progressing well.

The police successfully reclaimed a section of the valuables taken from ELKO stores located in Skeifan and Dalvegur, which included items worth millions. Four individuals are in custody, with suspicions that more are involved in the case, potentially linking it to organized crime. “The investigation is progressing well. We are actively interviewing and connecting individuals,” Jónasdóttir stated.

Mapping the activities of foreign criminal groups can be complicated, especially as individuals often have brief stays in Iceland. However, authorities are making headway in piecing together the information they have gathered. “We currently have a good picture of the connections involved,” she added.

A small amount of the stolen goods has been found, with police hopeful that more will be recovered. “We hope to recover at least the majority,” Jónasdóttir reassured.

ELKO’s manager, Óttar Örn Sigurbergsson, indicated that phones and other small yet valuable items were taken, which are easier to transport than larger electronics. The police closely monitor any potential routes for smuggling the items out of the country. “As soon as there is anything suspicious or indicative, all possible routes are examined—whether by air, sea, or postal services,” she explained.
