Traffic accident blocks lanes on Hämeenlinnanväylä near Nurmijärvi in Finland
A traffic accident occurred on Hämeenlinnanväylä shortly after noon on Sunday, just before Nurmijärvi. A small truck traveling from the south collided with a stationary protective vehicle of a tow truck. According to the Central Uusimaa Rescue Department, the truck overturned on its side, blocking both lanes heading north on Highway 3.
“There was a towing operation underway. Fortunately, the towing company had a large protective vehicle in use. The delivery truck crashed into this protective vehicle at high speed,” said Joni Marjanen, a duty officer from the Central Uusimaa Rescue Department.
The cleanup operation halted traffic between the Lamminsuon and Nurmijärvi junctions. Police directed southbound traffic to detours for over an hour. Two police patrol units, a motorcycle officer, rescue units, and an ambulance were present at the scene.
According to Marjanen, the driver of the colliding vehicle sustained minor injuries but did not require hospitalization.
The police urge drivers to exercise patience. While serious injuries were avoided, authorities are concerned about improper behavior from other motorists in the area. Near the accident site, some drivers made U-turns or drove against traffic on the highway.
“It takes time to redirect traffic past the accident site safely, but some motorists are unwilling to wait and attempt their own solutions,” said Tomi Salosyrjä, Chief Superintendent of East Uusimaa Police. He emphasized that such behavior creates highly dangerous situations and urged everyone to wait for official instructions.
The Traffic Management Center remotely lowered speed limits in the area before the accident location; however, the police noted that vehicles were still approaching at high speeds. Concerns over safety have also been raised regarding drivers stopping to take photos of the accident site. “This behavior is typical these days. We urge bystanders to move along and allow emergency workers to do their jobs,” Marjanen stated, adding that photography does not enhance anyone’s safety.
