Police respond to call about masked man in Vrensted, Denmark

During a shopping trip yesterday, police were called when René Nielsen, a resident of Vrensted near Løkken in northern Denmark, went to make purchases. The call was prompted by reports of a masked man entering the store. Nielsen, who recovered from an aggressive facial cancer tumor last year that spread to his neck, now wears a mask due to complications from his treatment, which he must use for the rest of his life.

Nielsen described the incident, stating that as he exited the store, the police arrived quickly in response to the call about a masked individual. He appreciated the conversation with the officers, who were understanding of his situation.

Due to the side effects of his illness, Nielsen is paralyzed on the right side of his face. A steel plate has been sewn into his eyelid to help him close his eye, and his lymphatic system swells, making it impossible for him to breathe without his compression mask. This mask must be worn both day and night.

Wearing a mask has posed social challenges for Nielsen, who notes that people often react with fear when they see him. This has led him to limit his outings, saying his home has become his prison and the mask his shackles.

Following the incident, he took to local Facebook groups to share his story in hopes of preventing future misunderstandings that might require police intervention when he shops. The police have reached out to him as well to raise awareness of his situation, aiming to avoid sending armed officers in response to his presence in public spaces. Nielsen also mentioned that he designed his mask, selecting from 256 colors in a short time, believing that the color is irrelevant to the unease it may evoke.
