Snowfall expected in southern Norwegian mountains prompts yellow weather warning
Autumn break is approaching for many in Eastern Norway, and a considerable number are expected to head to the mountains. Parts of the southern Norwegian mountains are forecasted to receive snow in the coming days, prompting the Meteorological Institute to issue a yellow weather warning.
In light of this, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration is advising motorists to assess their tire conditions if they plan to travel to the mountains. “We strongly recommend switching to winter tires,” says a traffic operator from the agency.
The yellow warning applies to the northern parts of the southern mountains. Starting Friday night, around 5-20 centimeters of snow is expected at elevations of 600 to 800 meters.
The warning is in effect for both Friday and parts of Saturday, which may be a popular travel day for those on holiday. The coming weekend, expected to coincide with the autumn break, may resemble a winter holiday in the southern mountains, according to the traffic operator. Cameras show that snow has already fallen and temperatures are below freezing in many locations.
A meteorologist has confirmed that snow showers are already occurring in the mountain areas, with cold air moving in from the northwest, resulting in rain and snow showers at elevations above 400 meters. Additional snowfall is forecasted for Saturday, with the yellow warning likely to be extended to Sunday morning. Areas in northern Innlandet and southern Trøndelag may see 5-10 centimeters of snow, while regions in Sogn og Fjordane and Møre og Romsdal could receive up to 15 centimeters, and locally as much as 20 centimeters.
Motorists are advised to be adequately equipped for winter driving conditions and to drive cautiously, as the first snowfall of the season can lead to slippery roads. The public is encouraged to check weather conditions via the Norwegian Public Roads Administration’s app or their website before setting out.
