“Lapua 1976” to stream on Netflix starting October 15 in Finland and other Nordic countries
A little over a year after its premiere, the film “Lapua 1976” is set to stream on Netflix in just a couple of weeks. Viewers will be able to watch the movie from their homes starting October 15. Throughout the year, it has consistently ranked among the most-watched films on Elisa Viihde.
The production team considers the film’s addition to Netflix a significant milestone. “We never really imagined we would be here with this film when we started its production,” said producer Mikko Jokipii in a statement. The production company Blankface has been preparing for this release since March. According to Jokipii, “Lapua 1976” gained momentum after the successful Netflix performance of the film “Kiiruna,” leading the team to reach out to the streaming giant, resulting in a fruitful collaboration.
Currently, there are fewer than 20 Finnish-language films available on Netflix, with only two released this decade. “We received inquiries from outside Finland shortly after the film’s release. It’s wonderful that Netflix wanted to include ‘Lapua 1976’ in its catalog, and it’s exciting that it can now be viewed in other Nordic countries as well,” said director Toni Kurkimäki.
Since its premiere last August, “Lapua 1976” attracted nearly 177,000 viewers in theaters, becoming the most-watched film in the history of its hometown, Lapua, in South Ostrobothnia. At the Jussi Awards, the film won the award for “Achievement of the Year,” was named the audience’s favorite film, and its lead actress Linnea Leino was recognized as the audience’s favorite actress.
