The sentencing for a fatal stabbing that occurred in April in the Pitäjänmäki area of Helsinki will take place today in the Helsinki District Court. Over the past year, there have been several reported incidents of violence among Roma individuals in public spaces, with at least six such cases known to Yle. The most recent incident occurred last week when a 35-year-old woman was shot to death by a man in downtown Tampere.

Area prosecutor Alexander Lindgren stated that it is uncertain whether the stabbing in Pitäjänmäki was related to honor-based violence within the Roma community. “I cannot say if this was a case of honor violence or a dispute arising from a relationship,” Lindgren said. He noted that insults directed at relatives are often viewed more seriously within Roma culture compared to the majority population. Nevertheless, he believes Roma culture played a role in the victim’s death, suggesting that insults against the perpetrator’s family partially motivated the crime.

According to the prosecution, the Roma man murdered his ex-partner in a fast-food restaurant to make their shared child an orphan. The 30-year-old man reportedly stabbed the 20-year-old victim 13 times at a table in the restaurant. The woman, born in 2002, died shortly after in the restaurant’s vestibule, with their three-week-old child present. The couple had separated, and the child resided with the mother. The man denies the murder charge, claiming he committed aggravated involuntary manslaughter and aggravated assault.

In addition to the man, two women face charges, with one, aged 34, having a significant criminal history. They are accused of assisting in the murder and protecting the perpetrator, which they deny. The trio purchased three knives from the Tripla shopping center in Helsinki before the incident and took a taxi to meet the victim. The older defendant was in a relationship with the accused man, while the younger woman, aged 23, had recently met the couple and offered them shelter.

The accused man has several prior convictions, including a restraining order issued by the Oulu District Court in October 2022 regarding the same ex-partner. He and the woman have a child together and divorced in 2021; the restraining order expired last October. The suspect claimed to have consumed two half-liter bottles of Koskenkorva vodka on the day of the incident.
