Iceland’s National Broadcasting Service reports 470 million krónur deficit in first seven months

In the first seven months of the year, the operational results of the National Broadcasting Service of Iceland have reported a deficit of approximately 470 million krónur. Projections indicate that, without any changes, the total operational loss for the entire year could reach about 200 million krónur. This figure is somewhat worse than previously expected.

The decline in financial performance is partly attributed to increased costs in the newsroom and expenses related to television programming. The expenses related to the recent presidential elections have significantly impacted the budget, as this year’s plans did not account for either the elections or their scale. Additionally, there were substantial unexpected costs incurred from participation in this year’s Eurovision contest.

The rising expenses in the newsroom can largely be attributed to unforeseen increases in salary and contractor costs due to volcanic activity in the Reykjanes Peninsula and the presidential elections. In light of the disappointing financial results, measures have already been taken to address these issues, with further actions planned to ensure that operations improve by the beginning of the next operational year and that the organization achieves a balanced budget by 2025.

The board of the National Broadcasting Service has emphasized that the results from the first seven months do not align with expectations. They noted that a detailed outline of mitigating actions had not yet been provided, but this will be rectified in the upcoming board meeting.
