Skúli Magnússon to resign as Parliamentary Ombudsman of Iceland to join Supreme Court

Skúli Magnússon will resign from his position as the Parliamentary Ombudsman of Iceland on Tuesday to assume a role as a justice at the Supreme Court of Iceland. During his tenure, he addressed various issues, including the controversial sale of a stake in Íslandsbanki and the temporary halt of whaling activities.

Today, the Parliament elected Kristín Benediktsdóttir as the new Ombudsman. She will succeed Skúli, who steps down next week.

While the office of the Ombudsman is respected, not all opinions are universally accepted. Skúli highlighted that it is reasonable for policymakers to disagree with the Ombudsman’s findings, particularly if they are presented in a constructive manner. He pointed out that the sale of the stake in Íslandsbanki should have been monitored more closely by the Ministry, indicating a lack of oversight and clear guidance within the government on compliance with administrative regulations.

He emphasized the necessity for officials to differentiate between their responsibilities as politicians and as public administrators. If ministers fail to make this distinction, it can lead to significant governance issues, potentially undermining public trust in governmental operations.

Furthermore, Skúli commented on the growing inclination to transfer matters to independent agencies, suggesting this arises from a lack of confidence in the Ministry’s ability to handle issues effectively. He warned that if this trend continues, it would weaken the professional integrity of governmental structure, with dire consequences for the overall system.

In the context of internal governmental collaboration, he expressed concern that without effective teamwork among ministers, the entire administrative process may become fragmented, leading to inefficiency in policy implementation.
