Concerns escalate over hazardous excavation site in Niemenranta, Tampere

Poorly secured construction site excavations pose unnecessary risks, notably in the Niemenranta area of Tampere, where a deep and steep excavation has raised ongoing concerns among local residents. This worry is particularly valid following a recent incident in Helsinki where a man died after falling into a trench.

Since early summer, a trench has been present next to a residential building on Federley Street. Additionally, an unauthorized shortcut has emerged alongside the construction zone, reportedly made by moving plastic construction barriers. This route is frequently used by locals to access a nearby parking area.

Resident Marika Ndjock lives close to the construction site. She expresses alarm at the sight of children walking near the deep pit. Ndjock claims that the trench, approximately four meters deep, has not seen any activity since June. “Especially now in the autumn, as it gets darker, it’s frightening to think someone might be found at the bottom of the excavation. Many children walk by and often peer over the edge,” she states.

The danger is exacerbated by a sign indicating the presence of a sidewalk, which is misleading as it does not warn of the sheer drop that follows directly after. “There is also a senior housing facility nearby, so the anxiety increases as the risk of an accident looms,” Ndjock adds.

Jaana Ojareks, property manager at VTS Homes, mentioned that the site is associated with a parking garage project, which is managed by Pirkanmaa Professional Management. As of Thursday, no comments were available from authorities, including the city of Tampere, regarding the responsibility for the site.
