King Frederik X lays foundation stone for restoration of Børsen in Copenhagen, Denmark

Exactly 163 days ago, Denmark was confronted with a disturbing sight as the iconic building Børsen was engulfed in flames. Commuters in Copenhagen watched helplessly as emergency services worked diligently to control the blaze. Although parts of the structure were saved, over half of the building succumbed to the fire. Since that incident, Brian Mikkelsen, director of Dansk Erhverv, has vowed to reconstruct Børsen’s exterior to its original form. The restoration efforts officially commenced today.

In a recent ceremony, King Frederik X laid the foundation stone for what will eventually become the new Børsen. This moment was met with great satisfaction by Mikkelsen, who expressed, “I can’t imagine anything more appropriate than having His Majesty, the King of Denmark, lay this cornerstone for the reconstruction of Børsen today. It is, in the truest sense of the word, historic.”

In addition to the foundation stone, the king also placed a time capsule within the building, containing a few significant items that reflect life in Denmark as of 2024, alongside the front pages of today’s newspapers. This capsule is not set to be opened for another 100 years.
