Denmark faces urgent call for nitrogen reductions to restore aquatic life

To address the issues of oxygen depletion, dead fish, and poor water quality in Denmark’s fjords, lakes, and streams, experts and environmental advocates emphasize the urgent need for significant reductions in agricultural fertilizer usage. A new report from the Ministry of Finance presents three scenarios outlining the necessary reductions in nitrogen from agriculture to restore healthy aquatic life:

1. The first scenario requires an annual reduction of 14,100 tons of nitrogen.
2. The second suggests a reduction of 13,600 tons per year.
3. The third proposes a decline of 12,900 tons annually.

This report, serving as a second opinion on a previous study, confirms that a reduction of 13,000 tons per year is essential for Denmark to comply with the EU Water Framework Directive, which aims for good water quality by 2027. The latest report indicates that one scenario proposes an additional reduction of 1,100 tons compared to the original recommendations.

Researchers argue that only the first scenario, with a 14,100-ton reduction, is feasible for improving marine environments. They criticize the Ministry’s calculations, which suggest a lower reduction need, as puzzling. Experts note that various environmental conditions would result from the three proposed scenarios, highlighting that not all are viable from a scientific standpoint.

The EU Water Framework Directive mandates that all water bodies achieve good ecological status by 2027 based on multiple biological indicators. The Ministry of Finance’s report will play a role in negotiations for a green tripartite agreement concerning nitrogen reductions in agriculture.

The Minister for the green tripartite agreement remarked that the report offers an updated scientific foundation for necessary nitrogen reduction efforts. However, some experts express disappointment, arguing that the report fails to adequately address the challenges facing Denmark’s marine environment.
