A large hydrogen refueling station is being constructed in Jyväskylä, Finland, marking the first of its kind in the country. The station will primarily serve heavy-duty vehicles, but will also cater to taxis and vans. Norwegian hydrogen station operator Vireon is behind the project and plans to establish a total of four hydrogen refueling stations across Finland.
According to Per Øyvind Voien, CEO of Vireon, new stations will soon be opened. The construction of the Jyväskylä facility is funded by the city of Jyväskylä and the Central Finland Mobility Foundation (Cefmof), a foundation established by the city, Toyota’s rally team, and the Toyota Mobility Foundation.
With the introduction of this hydrogen station, Jyväskylä aims to roll out Finland’s first hydrogen buses by July 2025, which will be integrated into the city’s public transportation system within the year. These buses are part of the city’s strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.
“We are now taking concrete steps toward this goal,” stated city manager Timo Koivisto in a press release. Koivisto emphasized that the opening of the hydrogen refueling station and the pilot program for hydrogen buses serve as an excellent foundation for building a green hydrogen ecosystem in Jyväskylä. The pilot program will include testing the performance of hydrogen buses in northern conditions.
Further updates on this initiative are expected.
