Car renters need to be aware of the costs associated with using the underwater tunnels, according to the Consumer Agency, which has received numerous inquiries and complaints from car rental companies recently.
Most complaints have come from foreign tourists who are confused about the fees when driving through the underwater tunnels. The company Tunnil has also contacted the Consumer Agency as tourists have reached out to them with similar questions.
As an example, the Consumer Agency noted that one rental company advertised free passage through the underwater tunnels. However, it turned out that this offer only applied to the Norðoyatunl and Vágatunl tunnels, and the renter was not informed of this limitation.
This situation is categorized as misleading marketing, according to the Consumer Agency. In other cases, unclear wording or contract terms from rental companies have left customers uncertain whether the tunnel fee applies one way or round trip.
Furthermore, there have been instances where rental companies have added value-added tax to tunnel fees, despite these charges being exempt from VAT.
The Consumer Agency has contacted the rental companies that received complaints. In all cases, the marketing and contract terms have been deemed problematic.
