Finnish street gangs appear to have gone “underground.” Previously known for their visibility through dangerous confrontations and bold social media presence, these gangs are now operating more discreetly. According to police, a significant shift in gang methods and public image has occurred over the past year. “Their activities are no longer as visible, and gang symbols or ‘brands’ are less prominent than before,” reports Crime Inspector Marko Forss from the Helsinki Police Department.

Authorities have observed indications that gang-related criminal activities have become more professional, evolving towards traditional organized crime patterns. Gangs now engage in criminal actions in a more networked manner with other criminal actors. “This makes it challenging to distinguish the activities of individuals previously linked to street gangs from those involved in organized crime,” Forss explained.

Inspector Kimmo Sainio attributes these changes partly to sentences handed down to key gang members and other law enforcement actions. “It may have forced them to operate differently, realizing that visibility on social media does not benefit their cause. Public activities attract attention and can facilitate police investigations,” Sainio added.

Furthermore, police have noticed an increasing influence from Swedish organized crime within Finnish gangs this year, with individuals potentially linked to drug trafficking entering Finland, either permanently or temporarily.

There remain around ten street gangs focused mainly in the Helsinki metropolitan area, comprising approximately 150 key individuals. Despite some successes in disrupting cycles of violence and seizing firearms, inspectors caution that the situation remains delicate, as any individual incident could escalate tensions profoundly.
