Peter Holm reflects on military service and friendships despite Denmark’s criticized efforts

Reflecting on his time as a deployed soldier, Peter Holm emphasizes significant experiences and deep friendships, dismissing the idea of failure. From 1986 to 2018, Holm served as a soldier and mechanic on seven missions, including in Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

Like many veterans, he has witnessed the substantial scrutiny of Denmark’s military efforts over the past three decades. In the documentary series “Welcome to the Frontline,” these efforts have been described as inadequate and a failure.

Holm counters this narrative, stating, “Those of us who have been there have worked hard and trained intensely to prepare for these missions. We have faced tough conditions, and it hurts to be called a failure.”

Currently residing at the Veterans Home in Aalborg, Holm acknowledges the profound impact his military service has had on him. He never expected it would affect him so deeply, but at one point, he felt he had reached his limit. Despite the challenges, he expresses no regrets.

“It may sound strange, but I have had incredible experiences with many wonderful people, and I still meet with many of them today. Although it has cost me my marriage and home, I am in a good place now.”

Holm is aware that several of his fellow soldiers lost their lives on the battlefield. Despite the criticism directed at Denmark’s overall military efforts, he takes pride in his contributions. “There is nothing anyone can critique about my performance. I carried out my duties 100 percent. I mourn my lost colleagues, but I still believe it was worthwhile. My missions were not a failure.”
