Greenland should actively participate in Nordic cooperation at the highest political level, according to Bryndís Haraldsdóttir, the president of the Nordic Council, who is currently in Nuuk.

Accompanying her on the trip are Oddný G. Harðardóttir, vice president of the Nordic Council, and Kristina Háfoss, the director.

Sweden did not extend invitations to Greenland, Åland, and the Faroe Islands during the Nordic leaders’ summit held in Stockholm in May. This decision was made by the Swedish Prime Minister, not the Nordic Council.

Mute B. Egede, the Premier of Greenland, expressed his discontent during a speech at the Nordic Council, stating that he no longer wishes to participate in Nordic cooperation. He emphasized, “I would have liked the Swedish Prime Minister to send invitations to all eight Nordic countries,” as noted by Bryndís Haraldsdóttir.

While visiting the Faroe Islands during the Ólavsøku festival, Haraldsdóttir reiterated that both the Faroe Islands and Greenland deserve representation in the Nordic Council.

For the Faroe Islands, Greenland, and Åland to become independent members of the Nordic Council, amendments to the Helsinki Agreement, the Nordic Council’s constitution, are required. A proposal to modify this agreement is currently in progress.

This proposal is set to be discussed at the Nordic Council’s annual session in Reykjavík in October. If approved, it will be forwarded to the Nordic Ministerial Council, which holds the final decision-making power.
