Former soldier Brian Kristensen reflects on Iraq experience during 2007 mission
The former soldier Brian Kristensen reflects on his experience in Iraq in 2007, recalling how he and his fellow soldiers were incredulous when they heard then-Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen speak about progress in the country. During a press conference that year, Rasmussen stated, “We believe the security situation in southern Iraq has improved enough for the Iraqis to take over responsibility for their own security.”
While the government portrayed a hopeful narrative about the war’s trajectory, boasting of a nation ready to maintain its own safety, Kristensen lived a different reality. He reported that the Iraqi security forces were inadequate—lacking numbers, poorly trained, corrupt, and infiltrated by militias. “They were not capable of, nor seemed interested in, ensuring security. They prioritized their own interests,” he said in a recent interview.
Kristensen is featured in the DR documentary series “Welcome to the Frontline,” which examines Denmark’s military efforts over the past 30 years, including Danish troops’ participation in the US-led mission in Iraq. Rasmussen has declined to comment on the documentary or to participate in follow-up interviews.
