A man in his thirties has been placed in custody for four weeks for distributing child pornography online.
The individual, who was arrested yesterday, faces charges under the penal code regarding the possession and distribution of pornographic material involving children, particularly under aggravating circumstances.
The offenses were committed over the internet, and the children involved have not been identified, according to the police.
The man appeared in a preliminary hearing at the High Court of the Faroe Islands today and was remanded in custody for four weeks.
Further investigations are ongoing.
The police investigation unit has been working on this case for some time and will conduct additional inquiries. Computer equipment and other electronic devices belonging to the suspect will be examined for indications of whether the offenses are more extensive or if there are multiple violations involved.
This case is referred to as a “NCMEC case,” initiated after the police in the Faroe Islands received a notification from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) in the USA, stating that potentially illegal material had been shared online.
NCMEC’s mission includes preventing sexual exploitation of children on the internet.
