Aalborg Carnival Association considers cancelling international parade amid financial concerns
The future of colorful costumes, feather adornments, and vibrant rhythms at Northern Europe’s largest carnival may be uncertain. The Aalborg Carnival Association is contemplating the elimination of its annual parade due to a substantial yearly deficit of about one million Danish kroner.
Jeanett Kaare, the carnival’s spokesperson, expressed that while the international parade, featuring carnival groups from around the world, brings grandeur to the event, the financial sustainability is a major concern. “We love the international parade, but ultimately, it must be profitable for us,” she stated.
Britt Kristensen, chairperson of the carnival group Virak, voiced her dismay at the potential loss of the parade. She highlighted its importance as the only venue in Denmark to showcase carnival traditions and artistry from across the globe.
Aalborg Carnival has proposed that participating teams join a larger parade featuring up to 100,000 costumed attendees instead, but Kristensen rejected this suggestion. She noted, “We cannot showcase our costumes, which include feathers, sequins, and near-nude designs, in an environment surrounded by inebriated individuals. It is too dangerous.”
The fate of the international parade will be addressed at a general assembly scheduled for Wednesday, where the carnival association will deliberate on its future.
