Man faces charges of aggravated arson at Oulu District Court in Finland

A 62-year-old man is facing charges of aggravated arson at the Oulu District Court. The man allegedly set fire to his rental apartment in Maikkula, Oulu, last May. According to the indictment, he doused a sofa in the apartment with an accelerant, collected small gas canisters, paint, and fuel nearby, and then intentionally ignited the fire before escaping through the balcony.

The blaze spread rapidly, causing significant damage to the roof structure of the apartment building. The man’s apartment and a neighboring unit were completely destroyed, and other apartments in the building also sustained various damages. The prosecutor is seeking a minimum of four years in prison for the man.

While he has admitted to starting the fire, he denies that it constitutes aggravated arson. The defendant claims that he did not intend to cause widespread damage or put others at risk. He has stated that during the incident, he was experiencing suicidal thoughts and struggling with mental health issues. His defense is demanding a psychological evaluation during the proceedings.

In contrast, a group of residents from the apartment complex is demanding that the man be ordered to pay compensation for the damages he caused, a claim that he has partially acknowledged. The trial commenced today at the Oulu District Court, and a ruling on the case will be issued later.
